Our 2022 Christmas and New Years adventure in Africa actually started at the TravelXpo here in Norway back in 2019. Me and my girlfriend had ambitious plans for a two month long journey through Africa, where we were looking to combine hiking in the Ethiopian Simian mountains with a safari in central Africa and a self-drive stage through Namibia and South Africa. There were many travel agents interested in providing their services for our trip, and we used the TravelXpo to soak in all the information we could get and identify all the interesting opportunities we could look to combine. Thereafter, comfortable at home in our couch we planned an exciting itinerary and booked our adventure for the fall of 2020. For our Ethiopian stage we booked through a local travel agency, a Botswana safari adventure was booked through The Grown-up Travel Company based on our talks with Andy Higgs at the TravelXpo and a 4X4 self-drive car was booked in Namibia. Deposits were paid, flights were booked, and hotels were reserved. It was time to lean back and wait for our adventure to begin.
As you all know, 2020 turned out not to be the year for travelling. The Covid pandemic hit us all, and we were obviously financially exposed with our pre-payments and commitments. Understandably, this uncertainty was a challenge for all the travel industry and it was quickly made clear to us that the correspondence and general approach to the uncertainty differed greatly between those we had commitments with. We remained optimistic and hoped for the longest time that our trip could happen, but in the summer of 2020 our flight tickets got cancelled and it became obvious that there would be no Africa adventure that year. Cancellation of our planned trip with the Grown-up Company was no concern what so ever, and our deposit was returned immediately. This cannot be said about all our other commitments, and in particular local bookings had to be resolved by involving our travel insurance company. Throughout the pandemic we keep receiving informative emails from Andy and in our minds it was always just a matter of time before we would eventually travel to Africa.
Vaccines came and the borders eventually opened again. It was time to plan for new adventures, and this time around we were travelling with my parents and my brother. As we all discussed where to travel and what to experience, it was obvious to me that the Botswana safari adventure stage of our previously planned trip could finally be fulfilled. It was however not clear if this trip was well suited for all of us and there were questions and uncertainties from my family that I was not in a position to answer. I put my mother in contact with Andy Higgs at The Grown-up Travel Company to ensure all my family members’ needs and potential concerns could be discussed and that the necessary arrangements could be made for this adventure to be enjoyable for us all. Andy had kept in contact with us throughout the pandemic, with informative updates around the situation in Africa and how a growing optimism for the return of tourism had risen from its fall. It did not take long before we again had booked an adventure to Africa, this time a 14 day safari drive from Johannesburg in South Africa to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe through the beautiful Botswana wilderness – “Wild Botswana and the Victoria Falls”. We were again excited for our upcoming adventure!
Prior to our travel we engaged with Andy in an attempt to optimize logistics and ensure we were as prepared as we wanted to be. We always received prompt and thorough replies to our queries, and found Andy to be readily available, very friendly, adaptive to our needs and proactive. It was evident that Andy had first-hand experience of our planned adventure, and his customer care came with an appreciated personal touch.
Arriving in Johannesburg in mid-December 2022, we finally knew this was real. Personally, I had decided to avoid looking through our itinerary in detail this time around. I had done so back in 2019 so the element of surprise could only enrichen my experience as the journey took place. The safari trip started off with an early morning meet-up at a hotel in Johannesburg were we met up with our fellow travellers and guides and were given some practical information from the travel company responsible, Sunway Safaris. We soon set off on our journey, twelve tourists from all over the world and two guides from Zimbabwe.
14 days later, with some 3000 photos taken, we were slightly sunburned and very happy that we had completed an adventure that will never be forgotten! The drives were long, the weather was hot and it took some time for us all to get comfortable with what Africa had to offer. If I am not mistaken, it was probably on the second day of bush camping in the Okavango delta that I really knew all of us were genuinely enjoying this adventure. Ironically this was also at the time were we were the most exposed and had the most unfamiliar experience of the entire trip. We were properly taken care of by our guides along the entire journey, whether on excursions, through border crossings or camp dining in the wilderness. All in all we had a wonderful adventure travelling through Botswana, and we can really recommend those who consider such an experience to make it a reality. Botswana proved to be a safe and well developed country, with beautiful nature, wilderness and people!
If I am to give some advice to future travellers, select a travel agent that gives you a good vibe and has time for you, be proactive and seek answers to questions you may have before and during the trip. These travel agents and guides have vast experience and have proven to me time and time again that they know what it takes to ensure your adventure in Africa becomes an enjoyable one!
